Thelayoutrearrangementoffashionproduction\r\nlines realizing many small batches is rarely deployed\r\naccordingtowellknownengineeringprocedures.Infact,it\r\nwouldoftenappeartoocomplextocallaplantengineerfor\r\nthe proper layout design of such small production lines.\r\nRather, it is preferred to apply empirical methodologies\r\nwhen considering, generally, factory knowhow, general\r\nbusiness needs, safety requirements, and so on. In the\r\npresent work, the results of a fashionmanufacturing line\r\nrelayoutwerecomparedbyanalysingthecurrentsituation\r\nwith the solutions provided by a homemade company\r\ndesign, both through a systematic layout planning\r\napproachandabroaderleanreengineeringactivity.\r\n\r\nInordertoevaluatetheeffectivenessofeachsolution,the\r\ndifferent alternatives were compared with the help of a\r\ndiscrete event simulator, analysing productivity,\r\ntransportation times and costs. The result of the case\r\nstudyshowedaslightadvantagewiththeleanapproach\r\ninconsideringsuchefficiencyindicators.Inaddition,the\r\nlean production methods allowed the designers to\r\nidentify some inefficiencies that other approaches could\r\nnotsee,sincethelatterdidnotfocusonproductionina\r\nholisticway.
